Is a Costco Membership Worth the Cost?

Have you been on the fence about whether or not a Costco membership is right for your budget and household? Is that membership fee all it’s cracked up to be? If you’ve been considering a Costco membership but are not sure if you should take the plunge and join, today I will cover several factors that may help make this decision easier for you.

In my opinion, the only membership worth paying for is one that you believe in or yields good results!

You should consider a Costco membership if:

It saves you money in the long run. Most of us need our basic household cleaning products, hygiene products, food staples and misc. items such as tires for your vehicle, there is no getting around purchasing most of these items. I like to break up the price of the item per unit, compare and then evaluate. For example, we all need toilet paper right? At Costco the Kirkland Signature 2 ply toilet paper costs $15.99 for 30 rolls/425 sheets making it .53 cents per roll. My local grocery store sells Angel Soft 2 ply at $13.99 for 12 rolls/500 sheets making each roll $1.17. Do a price comparison of how much you are truly saving, taking the cost of the Costco membership into consideration. My thought is you need to be able to save greater than the monthly fee listed below if you are shopping at Costco monthly. There are 3 membership options available, which brings me to my next point.

You are able to use the membership enough to justify the membership fee. Again, the bottom line is you need to be able to see a saving totaling the amount of your annual fee in order to justify the membership fee. There is no point on paying membership fees to an organization that you aren’t getting any use of. There are 3 membership options available.

Gold Star Membership $55.00 Annual Fee ($4.58 a month)

Business Membership $55.00 Annual Fee

You are willing to try new product brands. Try comparable products similar to that of your favorite brands/labels. Even though Costco carries plenty of items you find at your local grocery store they do not carry as many brand/specialty specific items or variety. If you are particular to certain brands/ labels and are not open to trying comparable products, you may be limiting your options. Costco runs promotional rebate/savings on certain products for a short period of time, which can offer an even greater savings. Costco carries many name brand products as well as their high quality Kirkland Signature label line. I have been so impressed with the quality of their label that a lot of the products I purchase are Kirkland Signature.

If after reading this you are still not quite sure if Costco membership is right for you or not, I encourage you to tag along with a friend or family member who is a member and do your own evaluation on the pros and cons of a Costco membership. If you become a member and later decide it’s just not worth the cost, you can cancel your membership anytime prior to your membership expiration date and receive a full refund.
